Utah expects to begin production of the first commercial oil sands mine in the U.S. by the end of 2015. The Utah Department of Natural Resources approved the PR Spring project in Utah in June. U.S. Oil Sands, Inc of Calgary, Alberta is to submit a plan for monitoring the quality of air and water at the project site by Nov 1, 2015. Output at the mine is expected to be 2,000 barrels per day. To date U.S. Oil Sands has over $100 million is developing the project and the new method of extraction for the oil sands, based on use of a citrus extract d-Limonene, a solvent derived from orange rinds.
