Oil and other shipments were reopened on July 17 in Istanbul’s Bosphorus Strait following last week failed coup by a faction of the Turkish military. The Bosphorus is the most important maritime transit point for oil coming from Russia and Turkish ports on the Caspian Sea. The 17 mile strait connects the Black Sea to the Mediterranean. The U.S. government considers the Borphorus a major choke point in the world with over 48,000 vessels per year passing through the difficult strait.
