The Pittsburg Post-Gazette announces that drilling in Pennsylvania’s Marcellus shale has increased, slowly and cautiously. At a meeting last week drillers in the Marcellus said they would be focused on economics not growth targets. Each company will determine drilling plans based on where they can drill in the most economic manner, some will target Marcellus shale and others will target the Utica shale. Most of the Marcellus drilling will be concentrated in Washington and Allegheny counties, PA and in northern West Virginia. The value of targeting wet or dry gas impacts the economics and “there’s the practical matter of where the company currently has the permits to drill.” Range Resources said they have permits to drill 42 horizontal wells from existing pads, which allows them to maximize drilling equipment use and minimize drilling time. Consol Energy will have two drilling rigs operating in the last half of 2016 and plans to partner with Nobel Energy in drilling Marcellus prospects in PA and WV.
